Silent Sermon is a video by Michael-Thomas Foumai and is a visual and musical experience inspired by John Cage.
The music accompanying the video is a work composed using chance operations. It is composed for string quartet and the musicians are given several parameters to perform. Each performer will begin on any pitch desired with the end goal that all the musicians will end the work on the same pitch in the same octave. The musicians can only only move through pitches via glissandi and may only stay on a specific pitch for no more than 5 seconds. The video edits and timings were also informed through chance operations, by picking from a bag, a given duration that was per-determined.
